The Leh Indian Glaciology Summer School (LIGSS) is a pioneering initiative designed to train the next generation of glaciologists in South Asia, with a limited number of seats open for participants from other regions of the world. Inspired by renowned programs such as the Alaska Glaciology School and the Karthaus Summer School, LIGSS aims to address the growing demand in South Asia and equips them with the expertise and global network in climate science, remote sensing, glaciohydrology, disaster risk assessment, and in-situ techniques—fields crucial for understanding and responding to the rapidly changing Himalayan cryosphere.
The curriculum is a comprehensive blend of:
12 in-person lectures led by leading experts,
Hands-on computer tutorials for practical skill development,
Evening research seminars to encourage discussion and idea exchange,
A one-day field excursion to Khardung Glacier for real-world exposure, and
Collaborative group projects and presentations to foster teamwork and innovation.
Beyond structured sessions, the program places strong emphasis on mentorship, ensuring that students, early-career researchers, and faculty have ample opportunities for direct interaction with instructors. By combining technical expertise, fieldwork experience, and international collaboration, LIGSS-2025 aims to shape a globally competent workforce capable of tackling the pressing challenges of Himalayan glacier science and its broader climate implications.
