The Indian Cryosphere Meetups have emerged as a significant platform for fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among Indian glaciologists. Beginning as a series of monthly online meetups in January 2021, these gatherings have provided a space for researchers, faculty, and students to discuss scientific advancements, plan fieldwork, and build a strong network. This initiative has helped early and mid-career scientists across India engage in regular discussions, host seminars, and strengthen national and international collaborations in cryospheric sciences.
Recognizing the importance of in-person interactions, the community committed to organizing annual Indian Cryosphere Meetups. The first of these was successfully held at IIT Ropar in January 2024, bringing together leading scientists, young researchers, and students from across India. The second edition is scheduled to take place at IIT Bombay in 2025, with IIT Roorkee set to host the event in 2026. These annual meetups serve as crucial touchpoints for advancing research, training the next generation of glaciologists, and fostering new partnerships.
The success of these initiatives paved the way for a major milestone—the establishment of the International Glaciological Society (IGS) India Branch. This branch aims to integrate Indian glaciologists into the global community, enabling them to engage in world-class research, training programs, and international collaborations. It will provide Indian researchers and students with a platform to participate in IGS workshops, symposiums, and scientific discussions. The branch also seeks to enhance cooperation with neighboring countries like Nepal and Bhutan, creating a strong South Asian network in glaciological research.
By establishing the IGS India Branch, Indian glaciologists now have a unified voice on the international stage, ensuring greater visibility and recognition for India’s growing contributions to cryosphere research. Through continued efforts in education, outreach, and scientific collaboration, this initiative is set to play a crucial role in shaping the future of glaciology in the region.
